Avery 5395 Template: Exact Layout, and a Way to Skip the Template

Avery 5395 is the standard self-adhesive name badge: 2⅓ × 3⅜ inch labels, eight to a letter sheet. The geometry below is the published spec — and if what you actually need is names on badges, you can skip the template entirely and print a finished sheet from a pasted list.

The exact layout

On an 8.5 × 11 inch sheet, the eight badges sit in two columns of four:

• Label size: 3.375″ wide × 2.3125″ tall (2⅓ × 3⅜″ as marketed)
• Left margin: 0.688″ · top margin: 0.594″
• Horizontal pitch (start of one label to the next): 3.75″
• Vertical pitch: 2.5″

The pitch numbers are the ones that matter. Templates that quote only the gap between labels drift a little with every row, and a sixteenth of an inch of drift is exactly enough to put row four's text on the adhesive border. The figures above reconcile against the full page: 0.688 + 3.75 + 3.375 leaves a 0.687″ right margin, and the four rows leave 0.594″ at the bottom — a symmetric sheet, which is how you know the spec is right.

One buying note: 5395 is the laser-printer packaging; Avery 8395 is the identical layout sold for inkjets. Any template or tool that fits one fits both.

Using a template vs. skipping it

The traditional route is Avery's Word template or their online designer: pick the product number, type or merge the names, print. It works, but it means a document, a merge, and a font decision for every batch — and homemade templates from the web are where the pitch drift lives.
