How Does Secret Santa Work?
Everyone draws one name, buys one gift, and stays anonymous until the reveal. The whole mechanic in five minutes: the draw, the budget, the rules people argue about, and how to run it.

Secret Santa is a gift exchange where everyone draws one name, buys one gift for that person within an agreed budget, and keeps who they drew secret until the gifts are opened. Instead of buying for the whole group, each person buys once and receives once.
The mechanics, start to finish
- Gather the group. Anyone in is in for both giving and receiving. Six to fifteen people is the sweet spot; three is the working minimum.
- Set the budget and the date. One firm number ("$20"), one exchange date. Decide both before the draw so nobody signs up for something they didn't expect.
- Draw names. Every person is assigned someone to give to. The two constraints: nobody draws themselves, and everybody is drawn exactly once.
- Shop in secret. Each person buys one gift for their person, within budget.
- Exchange and reveal. Gifts are opened at the gathering. Whether givers reveal themselves is the group's call — guessing is half the fun in most rooms.
Where it goes wrong
Almost always at the draw. Paper slips produce self-draws that force embarrassing re-dos, and in mixed groups couples drawing each other defeats the point — they already exchange gifts. The other classic is the A-and-B swap, where two people happen to draw each other and the exchange collapses into a pair trade.

Common variations
- Wishlist mode: everyone shares a short list or fills a questionnaire, so gifts land even between strangers.
- Themed: all gifts must fit a theme — cozy, useful, under $5, locally made.
- White elephant: a different game, despite being mentioned in the same breath — gifts go into a pool and get stolen in turns rather than drawn by name.
