How to Pick a Winner from a List

To pick a winner from a list, paste your entries one per line and draw one at random. You don't need a spreadsheet formula or a coin — the list is the input, and a single draw is the output.

What counts as a list

Anything you can put one per line: names, email addresses, ticket numbers, order IDs, usernames. If you have the entries in a spreadsheet or a form export, copy the column and paste it in. Duplicate lines merging on their own is worth having, so a name that appears twice doesn't quietly get two chances.

The spreadsheet way, and why it's fiddly

You can do this in a spreadsheet with a random-number column and a sort, and it works — but it is a few steps every time, it is easy to get subtly wrong, and nobody watching believes a sorted column the way they believe a draw. For a one-off it is more setup than the job deserves.

Drawing so people believe it

If the winner matters to anyone but you, draw where they can see it. A pick shown on a screen — a moment of suspense, then the name — carries more weight than a result you announce, because the people watching saw it land rather than taking your word for it.

One winner or several

If you need more than one, set the number and draw them together as distinct names, or draw one prize at a time and keep past winners out so nobody wins twice. Either way the list stays the same; only the number of names you pull changes.
