Delivered vs Read on iMessage: What the Labels Mean

"Delivered" means your message reached the other person's device; "Read" means they opened the conversation — and it only appears if they have read receipts turned on. When there is no label at all, it is usually one of a few specific things, not proof of being ignored.

Delivered

A small Delivered under your last message means iMessage handed it to their phone successfully. It says nothing about whether they've looked at it — only that it arrived. It shows on iMessage (blue) threads; a plain text (green) usually shows nothing.

Read

Read, with a timestamp, means they opened the thread — but you only see it when the other person has read receipts switched on. Plenty of people leave them off, so a message can be read with the sender never seeing a Read label. Its absence is not evidence of anything.

Sent as Text Message

If a bubble turns green and reads Sent as Text Message, iMessage couldn't deliver it — no internet on one side, or iMessage unavailable — so the phone rerouted it as a normal SMS. Why messages go green in the first place is covered in blue versus green.

The typing indicator

The three animated dots mean the other person is typing right now — though it can linger if they start a message and stop. It is not a status label the way Delivered and Read are; it appears live and disappears when they stop or send.

When there's no label

No label under your message usually means one of three things: they have read receipts off, the message is still sending, or it went as a plain text that doesn't report back. None of them tells you they saw it and chose to ignore you — the system simply isn't reporting that.
